Texas’ Nightmare: Angels Sign Hamilton To 5 Year, $125 Million Deal

December 14, 2012 Leave a comment

player-WThe Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have agreed to sign Josh Hamilton to a 5 year, $125 million deal, once again, laying relatively low and then snatching up the offseason’s biggest position player prize. It’s likely to be an overpay over the life of the contract, but the Angels are in full win-now mode after last year’s spending spree that brought in Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson. Hamilton joins a stacked lineup that includes Pujols, the best player of the last decade, and Mike Trout, the best player last year. Hamilton’s signing is an especially big sting for the Texas Rangers who both see their biggest lineup monster leave, only to go to a major AL West rival who they will play 18 times a year.

Proposition 8 Declared Unconstitutional Cheers Gay Marriage Supporters

February 8, 2012 1 comment

Proposition 8 Declared Unconstitutional Cheers Gay Marriage SupportersA federal appeals court has declared California’s 2008 voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage as unconstitutional. It even concluded that the ban did nothing more than to ‘lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians.’

The 2-1 ruling by the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals was narrowly written to limit its scope to California’s borders and [possibly even avoid review by the Supreme Court. However, gay-rights advocates are hailing Tuesday’s decision as historic, while supporters of Proposition 8 immediately vowed to appeal.

The court did not expand on the constitutional rights of gays and lesbians, instead, based their decision on a 1996 US Supreme Court precedent that stated that a said majority may not take away the rights of a minority without legitimate reasons.
