Karachi’s ‘Must Have Desi Food’ List

February 3, 2012 Leave a comment

Karachi’s ‘Must Have Desi Food’ ListFood is almost a religion in Pakistan. Saying that would be kind of blasphemous, but we Pakistanis love our food – and we love eating out. While on one end of the spectrum you’ll see big chains of fast foods like KFC, McDonalds, Nando’s, and Hardees  – on the other end are delicious delicacies of Pakistani origin – known as desi foods.

The term ‘desi’, refers to someone who belongs to the land, in this case, Pakistan. Food items here reflect the general culture and are usually imported from the Mughal era. You see the ostentatious Mughal culture reflect in the biryani and nihari – the former being a concoction of rice and curry while the latter is a heavy, gravy based dish, which is almost indescribable.  But these are not all, there are countless items of food that are reflective of the Indo-Pak culture and the depth of flavors speak for themselves.

5 Things Pakistanis Have Never Experienced Before Imran KhanTo say that the PTI – Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf is going from strength to strength would not be wrong. In a little less than a year the PTI have managed to galvanize support from people from all walks of life. More importantly, they have managed to spur the youth of the country. More than half the population of Pakistan, nearly 63%, falls under 25 years of age.

That isn’t the only thing that the PTI and Imran Khan have managed. They have also managed to bring forward an entirely new way of organizing rallies and getting together people. Relying on social media – the power of internet and just ‘marketing’ their gig to get the word out to enough people has proved to be the winning formula for the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf. The strategy is clearly working out as the number of people attending their rallies has increased. Not just that there are a also a lot of old school politicians who have started abandoning their sinking ships to join Imran Khan’s PTI. Their methods have indeed been revolutionary and are sure to change the way things are done in the future as far as Pakistani politics is concerned.

Imran Khan – Karachi Calleth

In this episode of the Truth Serum: After the popular rally of support in Lahore will Imran Khan defy the odds again and hold a similar rally in Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan?

There a buzz of change in the air with regards to Pakistani politics especially amongst the disenfranchised youth of Pakistan. This is especially true after the stellar showing of support for Imran Khan at the Lahore rally. A true acid test of his popularity would come in the form of holding a similar rally in the biggest and the most economically influential city of Karachi. MQM has an almost Mafioso type grip on the city. Past incidents point to the city erupting in violence if MQM demands are not met. Why is Karachi so important? For multiple reasons.

First if he succeeds here as he did in Lahore it will be a true indicator to the people of Pakistan and the outside world that he is a genuine contender with a broad base of support and that a sea change is coming to Pakistan in election of 2013.

Secondly his visit will be a true test for law enforcement authorities, the paramilitary forces and the army to show that this major metropolis is actually in their control as opposed to that of political organizations and their armed wings doing as they please.

Lastly it will also be a test for the people of this city to show without fear or intimidation that they can congregate, support and eventually vote according to their free will without being coerced.
