Zardari Illness or Silent Coup?
In Truth Serum this Week: President Zardari’s sudden departure from the country has the world abuzz about the potential of a silent coup in Pakistan. A Foreign Policy article posed several questions about the circumstances and timing of Zardari’s departure. Zardari’s spokesperson and PPP officials are dismissive of the rumors and claim that he is having a routine medical checkup done in Dubai and will be back in the country in a few days. The next few days will determine as to whether anything significant will change in Pakistan but the noose has been tightening around Zardari with the memo gate scandal and the reopening of the NRO cases. Complicating matters further are the deteriorating Pakistani relationship with the United States.
Imran Khan – Karachi Calleth
In this episode of the Truth Serum: After the popular rally of support in Lahore will Imran Khan defy the odds again and hold a similar rally in Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan?
There a buzz of change in the air with regards to Pakistani politics especially amongst the disenfranchised youth of Pakistan. This is especially true after the stellar showing of support for Imran Khan at the Lahore rally. A true acid test of his popularity would come in the form of holding a similar rally in the biggest and the most economically influential city of Karachi. MQM has an almost Mafioso type grip on the city. Past incidents point to the city erupting in violence if MQM demands are not met. Why is Karachi so important? For multiple reasons.
First if he succeeds here as he did in Lahore it will be a true indicator to the people of Pakistan and the outside world that he is a genuine contender with a broad base of support and that a sea change is coming to Pakistan in election of 2013.
Secondly his visit will be a true test for law enforcement authorities, the paramilitary forces and the army to show that this major metropolis is actually in their control as opposed to that of political organizations and their armed wings doing as they please.
Lastly it will also be a test for the people of this city to show without fear or intimidation that they can congregate, support and eventually vote according to their free will without being coerced.
Mother in Law Hillary Clinton and the End Game in Afghanistan
In this episode of the Truth Serum: The misbalanced, wobbly and distrustful relationship between Pakistan and the United States continues to trudge along. The United States’ stick and carrot approach with simultaneous warnings and appeals for help continue to baffle the Pakistanis. The best response to the U.S. government’s strategy came not from the Pakistani Government or any official but from an ordinary citizen who labeled Clinton and the U.S. as the always demanding and never satisfied Mother in Law. Still the end game in Afghanistan is very much on the minds of U.S. officials and tri lateral talks are under way to formalize the U.S. troop exit from the region. Pakistan’s preference is to declare cease fire in Afghanistan and to draw all warring parties to the table while the U.S. position seems to be to talk and fight at the same time. For the Pakistanis the demanding mother-in-law’s trip is about to come to an end and they are excitedly helping her back the bags for now. In their estimation all problems will subside once they leave. But this past decade has left them with a huge militancy and extremism problem which is still unraveling. Can their weak government and their increasingly stretched army withstand these challenges?
